Getting adequate rest has benefits for all aspects of our lives that quite often get overlooked. Baobab Suites make it easy for you.

According to data gathered by the Centre for Sociological Research (CIS), Spaniards sleep an average of 7.13 hours a night and 63% of us see that as being enough. However, these data are hiding something.

Not counting weekends, half of Spaniards, 47.1% to be exact, don’t get an average of 7 hours of sleep a night and 10% of those consulted get less than 6 hours’ sleep.

This means that quite a lot of us get a not-so-great or even a terrible night’s sleep. According to the World Health Organisation, adults need between 7 and 8 hours of sleep per night. However, getting less than 6 hours’ sleep can lead to health issues.

Obviously the first thing is we feel run down and tired during the day, however, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Lack of sleep alters how different processes in our body function such as reflexes (which can lead to accidents); it reduces our ability to concentrate; it alters gastric processes and can raise blood sugar; it increases our appetite (and, in turn, the likelihood of becoming obese); it weakens our immune system (making us more susceptible to infections) and, last but not least, it can lead to mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.

For this reason, we cannot overlook just how important it is to have somewhere with the right conditions to get the recommended hours of sleep and, not only that, to ensure that we truly rest. At Baobab Suites, the five-star hotel in Costa Adeje, Tenerife Sur, this is of the utmost importance; they offer their guests a wide range of services so that they can completely unwind on their stay.

First things first: the bed and the pillow. Guest don’t usually leave online reviews praising the comfort of the beds in a hotel, but that is precisely what happens at Baobab Suites. The management explains that “as well as a wide range of free pillows for guests to choose from, our mattresses guarantee firmness in the lumbar area, less body pressure, no movement and a healthy back position.

Beds are made even more comfortable with a 5 cm visco-elastic mattress topper that guarantees the utmost relaxation”.

Nevertheless, apart from laying the foundations for a good night’s sleep, the hotel also goes to great lengths to create the right conditions for rest during the day which it does mainly through three mechanisms: exercise, relaxation and nutrition.

Firstly, to burn off enough energy during the day so we can easily fall asleep at night, “we offer outdoor Hatha Yoga classes, a form of therapeutic yoga that strengthens and activates the body and mind”, the hotel explains. “What’s more, Aero Yoga; that helps to stretch the muscles and improve flexibility, while boosting memory and creativity. And, last but not least, Pilates, led by two of the Canary Islands’ best and most experienced professionals: Ana Lozano and Yanina Ialorenzo”.

On the other hand, it goes without saying that going to bed when you are calm and relaxed is the best way to fall asleep. Baobab Suites is renowned on the Canary Islands for its wellness offer, with therapies and treatments that strike the perfect balance between health, well-being and physical exercise. Introducing the MAJŶ Project, a unique and exclusive initiative in the Canary Islands, the collaboration between two companies: Nirama (Ayurvedic Treatments and Therapies Centre) and Ana Lozano Pilates. “The hotel focuses on natural and certified organic brands, which exclusively use vegetable raw materials, free of artificial substances and animal products, respectful of humans and the environment”, they explain.

Finally, according to experts, a healthy and balanced diet also makes it easier to get a good night’s sleep. Although meals before bedtime should be on the light side, they must provide our body with the energy it needs to perform its vital functions at night. Adequate hydration is also of the utmost importance. Baobab Suites takes care of this aspect in its Fuel RestoBar where you can tuck into vitamin-loaded salads and juices brimming with nutrients, vegetarian and vegan dishes, as well as grilled meat or fish. “If haute cuisine is more up your street”, the hotel explains, “give the Sucás restaurant a try, where guests can enjoy an unforgettable gastronomic experience with mouthwatering flavours, the freshest ingredients and top-class presentation”.

And, after a restful night’s sleep, get the day off to a healthy start with breakfast. “How about an organic gourmet box with seasonal tropical fruits, bananas and sweet papaya from the neighbouring La Calabacera farm”. The best way to get your day off on the right foot without a shadow of a doubt.
