What types of turtles are there in the Canary Islands?

These marvellous animals have inhabited the earth for 200 million years. There are currently 7 species of sea turtles, 4 of which can be seen in Canarian waters.

  • The loggerhead turtle is the most common in the archipelago. These groups are made up of young animals that feed in our waters. These animals probably come from the American coast and return later to reproduce.
  • The leatherback turtle has a skin-covered carapace with 7 longitudinal ridges. It is black in colour and adult individuals reach up to 2 metres in length.
  • The green turtle has a rounded beak and its underside is characterised by the white colour of its belly.
  • The hawksbill turtle is the one with the sharpest beak and the least frequent in Canary Islands waters of all those mentioned.

Where to find turtles in Tenerife?

Finding these animals at shallow depths and close to the coast in Tenerife is not easy. Therefore, perhaps snorkelling is not the best option if your aim is to see these reptiles. Scuba diving will ensure greater success in your search for this species.

However, there are some key places to spot sea turtles. In the Palm Mar area there are still a few specimens in shallow waters. With a bit of luck you may be able to spot them.

Differences between snorkelling and diving

Scuba diving is immersion in an aquatic environment: either in the sea or in the pool, either with basic diving equipment, professional equipment or without equipment.

Snorkelling, on the other hand, is the observation of the sea but at the water’s surface or at a depth of a few metres. There are big differences in terms of risk, knowledge and equipment with respect to scuba diving, which has the proximity and the possibility of interacting with new species.
