Our island has become a reference for cycling training. Amateurs and professionals agree in mentioning our island as a reference for cycling holidays in Tenerife in pre-season.
The altitude, the slope, the good weather all year round, the quality of the roads and the ease of mobility are some of the most important virtues of cycling holidays in Tenerife. Experts highlight these virtues and recommend that professionals travel to the island during the pre-season and adapt their organism to the oxygen deficiency at altitude that our higher roads can cause.
For example, Tour de France and Vuelta a España champion Primoz Roglic is a regular on the islands. In February 2021 he visited the roads of the islands with his Jumbo Visma team. Steven Kruijswik and Wout Van Aert accompanied him on this training trip. Another of the undisputed leaders of world cycling, Tadej Pogacar, also stayed in Tenerife a few weeks earlier. His team UAE Team Emirates had a pre-season training camp on the island’s peaks and bends.
A pleasure for amateurs
Not only professionals enjoy cycling in Tenerife, amateurs also have great routes to cycle. All of them with varying degrees of difficulty. The tourism website of the Cabildo de Tenerife offers up to eight quite accessible cycling routes, some of which we will briefly mention.
Garachico – Erjos – Santiago del Teide – Masca – Buenavista – Garachico
Starting in Garachico, at sea level, you will face a route of 54 kilometres with a gradient of 6%. Incredible landscapes in the north of the island, reaching an altitude of over a thousand metres.
Costa Adeje – Trasera de Los Cristianos – Carretera General del Sur – Arafo – dorsal de la Esperanza – Parque Nacional del Teide – Vilaflor – Arona – Trasera de los Cristianos – Costa Adeje
Almost 162 km long. The route starts in the south of the island, in Costa Adeje, and runs through the Teide National Park. A challenging route due to the number of kilometres and the accumulated difference in altitude. The estimated duration of the route can reach eight hours.
South High: Costa Adeje – Trasera de Los Cristianos – Carretera General del sur – La Camella – Granadilla – Vilaflor – Arona – Trasera de Los Cristianos – Costa Adeje
A slightly shorter route than the previous one. With a distance of 62 kilometres it reaches the highest point of the village of Vilaflor. At a normal speed we can finish this route in about three hours.
La Orotava – Teide National Park – La Esperanza – La Laguna – El Sauzal via Los Ángeles – La Matanza – Santa Úrsula – La Orotava
Another of the routes that reaches the Teide National Park, in this case on the north side, is this one that starts in La Orotava. 98 km long with an average gradient of 5.4%. We will reach an altitude of over 2300 metres.
These and many other options will be available to you during your stay on the island. Cycling in magical surroundings. It seems incredible to get authentic mountain scenery and magnificent beaches on the same route.
